Crazy Shortcut Quilts – Crazy Quilt As You Go!

Hi, I’m Sarah, and this is Crazy Shortcut Quilts, a book that my mother and I co-wrote, to show you how to use your decorative
stitches to do your quilting for you and shows you how to use a super simple
quilt as you go technique to pitch blocks together. Hi, I’m Marguerita, and I’d like to show you a
quick demonstration on how the technique works.

quilt as you go technique to pitch blocks together. Hi, I’m Marguerita, and I’d like to show you a
quick demonstration on how the technique works. Most of the quilts in the book use anywhere from 12 to 18 inch squares.

anywhere from 12 to 18 inch squares. For this demo, I’ve just
got about a 5 inch square to show you. Your going to use as many fabrics
as you choose for your project. For this one I just used 4. So, starting with however many squares
your project calls for, in the book, you’re going to make your first cut.
So, starting with however many squares
your project calls for, in the book, you’re going to make your first cut. Just line them up and make your first cut. You can use this piece is a template to make the rest of your cuts
through your fabrics, if you want. When you’re done, mix and match your pieces randomly. Sew them back together. And then layer them,
and make your second cut, okay. Once you’ve made your second cut, mix and match, again. Sew them together, randomly. And you’re going to have all your squares, with just two cuts, lots of fabrics, all mixed up together.
with just two cuts, lots of fabrics, all mixed up together. That’s where we get the crazy part. When you’ve got that part done you’re going to layer all your squares with your batting and backing. These, again, are going to be in a pretty
easy to use size. 12 to 18 inches square.
with your batting and backing. These, again, are going to be in a pretty
easy to use size. 12 to 18 inches square. Then you’re going to use all the
decorative stitches on your sewing machine. And this is where
you really get to have some fun. We use rayons, cotton, variegated, threads. We use every stitch that we’ve got on our machines. And you can vary the settings. Even if you have a machine with
just a few decorative stitches. You can vary the settings
and get lots of different looks. That’s really where things get fun. Then you trim up all your squares, when you’re done, and add your sashing strips. We add searching strips to the front and back. Join our squares together, so that on the back, they’re finished. On the front, they’re going to look like this. Until you fold this piece over, and then you’re done. You join your squares together in a row, and then you join your rows together, into a quilt. And when you’ve done that
your quote is finished. It just needs binding. It’s a simple and easy quilt-as-you-go method
And when you’ve done that
your quote is finished. It just needs binding. It’s a simple and easy quilt-as-you-go method that’s very popular. Lots of people are having a lot of fun with it. So here you can see one of the quilts from the book. I made this, with the wild colors. I made this on my old Kenmore. It only has about six or seven decorative stitches. So I just picked one that I liked a lot, and I used a variegated thread. That worked really well for this quilt. So there’s a lot of different options. I hope you’ve enjoyed the demo. We have a website. Its www.crazyshortcuts.com And Sarah and I both blog. We’d love for you
to stop by our blogs and say “hi”. Post a comment. And if you have a picture of your Crazy Shortcut Quilt we would love to see it. Thank you.
